Description
The Silo Restaurant was originally built in 1967 by the Walters-Ceplo-Hingos family and was called “Ye Olde Silo”. Ye Olde Silo restaurant closed in 1972 and stood vacant until October 1973, when Stanley and Mae Kurz of Oak Ridge, NJ, purchased it.
Stanley and Mae reopened in January 1974 as The Silo. Their son Gary joined forces with his parents the same year. The industrious trio spent the next several years establishing The Silo’s reputation as a fine dining establishment. In the early 1980’s Mae and Stan’s health declined and both parents passed away within a few years of each other, leaving Gary to run the restaurant on his own.
A devastating fire on May 22, 1985 threatened to destroy Gary’s vision for the future of the restaurant. In a real show of community spirit–friends and customers came together to help cleanup after the fire so that rebuilding could occur.
Following a huge thank you party for all who helped Gary in this time of need, the new and improved Silo reopened on September 17, 1985. A banquet room accommodating parties up to 300 was added. New and extensive landscaping of the grounds enhanced the natural beauty of the view from the hillside, creating a beautiful backdrop for weddings. Additionally in 1987 three overnight guestrooms were added.
The success of The Silo is not only credited to the Kurz family’s hard work but also to the many long-term dedicated employees. The perseverance and expertise of Gary and his staff continue to ensure that The Silo exceeds expectations of a fine dining experience.
